Having never worked in a flower shop before, Phyllis, the owner of The Enchanted Florist, located in Old Town Alexandria, Va., saw something in me that led her to believe I had what it takes to create beautiful designs for her clients. Or, maybe it was because I pestered her for weeks, so she finally hired me. Whatever the reason, which Phyllis told me it was because she was so impressed with my cover letter, I got the job! Willingly, I started at the bottom, learning how to condition and prep flowers for the designers.
Within days, I was answering phones, helping customers, and designing the storefront. I received high acclaim for my hospitable demeanor and approach during the store’s Winter Open House evening event. After the New Year, amid a late winter snowstorm, I walked six blocks through a foot of snow to make sure people got their flowers. That was the day I created my first masterpiece.
Now, four years later, I am still creating floral arrangements. In addition, I have recently joined the Flower Guild at my church to further use my passion, talent, and skills. It isn’t every day you get to enhance the Spiritual experience for others through beauty and inspired design.
