To Binge or Not to Binge? The Truth is in the Potato.

Oh, spring is in the air and the sun is shining through our windows for longer periods of time.  The light is revealing all the dirt and dust I’ve missed through the winter months. I see the clutter in a different way, and suddenly want to go on another one of my trash-binging tirades.

But, it’s still a little early.  It’s only been two months since my last one!  To binge, or not to binge?  That is today’s question.

When we moved to Germany, life was complicated, and our things arrived from three different locations – Pakistan, European storage and Virginia.  Needless to say, when we got everything in one place, I was overwhelmed.  I did some serious paring down and de-cluttering of belongings.  After 1.5 years, I finally felt pretty good about what was left.  At the new year, I thought, oh, I got this minimalist thing now!

I could breathe, I could move and I enjoyed all the things that remained.  But, since the master session of disposal, I’ve felt much of the personality and flare of making it a personal space was lost.  So, I’ve been decorating and redecorating the ‘communal’ areas of the house.  Every few days, I think, oh, this is NOT working.  Let’s try this…

With the inspiration of creating the sunroom over the weekend, it helped me visualize the rest of the space and what would make it more comfortable and relaxing.  A nice cleaning session not withholding, I put away much of the little decorative pieces that don’t do much except collect dust and make me feel like I’m suffocating.  My husband was the official window cleaner, and I swept, vacuumed and dusted the furniture.

It’s feeling like home.  A relaxing, energizing and familial home.  And, that brings me back to the question – binge or not binge?

Since I ‘put away’ a lot of those little things that don’t bring peace or joy,  my closet space is looking overrun.  My Uzbek wardrobe is piled high inside with boxes and gifting supplies.  Sheets and bedding that hasn’t been used in years is in sight when I open the closet door to stash away another piece of unnecessary goods.

So, I asked myself – is it time to really tackle all the closets?  Or, do I ignore them since I don’t live in them?  Hmmm….

That’s when I remembered the Petunia Family my daughter created yesterday.  Nestled behind the loveseat, the family of four smiled at me as I looked at their faces and found the answer to my question.

I think it’s time to purge!

And, I better not miss any nook or cranny,

otherwise our potato heads might lose their long lost cousin –
