That pesky to-do list.

Yesterday, I took some much needed time to mark a few things off my to-do list from 2015.

What did I accomplish?  Let me tell you – they are revolutionary:

  • Registered my PayBack card for my grocery store, bookstore and department store purchases
  • Signed up for delivery service for my groceries
  • Started using a meal planner worksheet

Why is this so revolutionary?  Because I hate food.  Seriously.  Don’t get me wrong.  I like food that tastes good, but I used to have some issues way back when that involved not eating so much – food was the enemy and I was determined to conquer it through avoidance.  Unfortunately, that doesn’t work out so well, as I found out.

Since my early 20’s, I’ve been searching for a better way.  YEP.  The last 13 years have been mind boggling for me.  Just as soon as I thought I had this food thing figured out, some life event would happen and I was right back at square one.

First, I got married; then we started a family.  I found out my husband likes to eat.  And, that babies love to eat.

After I thought I had that family feeding thing down pat, it was time to move half-way across the world and plop down in Uzbekistan.  WHAT?  It seriously took me the entire two years that I lived there to figure out how and what to eat.  Everything I knew about everything (including language), was moot.  Talk about Maslow’s hierarchy of needs – my self-actualization journey has repeatedly started over at the bottom of the ladder for more than a decade.

Every time we move, it’s like reinventing the food chain.  Where do I shop; where’s the good meat?  Why are they selling lard by the kilo???????????????????????????

Slap my forehead.

I’ve tried being the good wife, mom and homemaker, I really have.  Guess what?  It’s just not in me.  I do not enjoy cooking at all.  I don’t mind baking, there is a wonderful science to it – but, I recently gave up sugar, so that is on hold at the moment.

Here we are on our fifth assignment.  You’d think we’d learned a few lessons over the years.  (Well, technically we have, but I’m trying to make a bigger point here folks, go with it.)

Since moving to Germany, my grocery runs have increased from 1-2 a week, to at least every other day, if not every day, sometimes even multiple times a day.

Slap my forehead and my knee.

I’m limited to the amount of food that I’m able to carry three blocks and up three flights of stairs.  Seeing that I’m only 4’10, you can imagine that is not very much.  I am no bodybuilder, friends!  (And, I like cute shoes.  Cute shoes aren’t always practical.  So, my footwear also limits my ability to carry much.  Convenient, I know.)  And, don’t get me started on the stress involved with bagging my own stuff.

So, as CHANGE is the theme for the year, I decided to change my attitude (or maybe my habit) towards the one thing I really loathe – meal time.  In 2016, I’m going to conquer my enemy, but in a much more productive and healthy manner than simply avoiding it.

That’s right – I’m going to DOMINATE!  (Now, repeat that sentence, but imagine it coming from a loud speaker with a deep voice, behind your head.)

Time for you to slap your own forehead.  Doh!

While my husband is confused at why it has taken me so long to do this, I know that it is simply a matter of relenting myself to the fact that my approach was wrong and needed to be corrected.  Like many people, I am stubborn and don’t like to admit defeat.  Giving in felt like defeat.

Yesterday, I realized I was only defeated if I continued trying the same plan of action, but expecting better results – changing my strategy allows me to move forward in the battlefield.

Now, I can’t take all the credit for my success.  Credit is due to a major role player in yesterday’s events.

Drum roll please…

Thank you Google translate for making my life so much easier this year.  The idea that my groceries will arrive at my doorstep Saturday morning is AMAZING.  My arms, legs and lungs thank you, endlessly.

Until tomorrow my friends –

Cheers & Champagne,
